Traveling can be one of the most rewarding undertakings in which a person can engage. Most people tend to try and stay with the familiar when they start to plan their travels. The United States is the leading destination for Americans, Europe is the leading destination for Europeans, and so on. By getting out of one’s comfort zone, travel can really expand his or her cultural awareness and understanding of the world.
Traveling to out-of-the-way places can be a great way to get some great excitement into one’s life. One of the coolest places to get a unique experience is East Africa. The nations that make up the former British East Africa are Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. These nations have a beautiful landscape and amazing wildlife. There are many national parks that African nationals and those from abroad can enjoy. These parks maintain impressive populations of exotic animals that are not seen in the wild very often.
Amboseli National Park
One of the most impressive national parks in Africa is Amboseli National Park which sits on the Kenyan side of the Kenya/Tanzania border. This park is most noted for its large population of African elephants. It is not unusual to see 25 to 50 elephants gathered around at one time within the confines of Amboseli. Another prominent feature of the park is its location. It is set at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. This mountain rises over 19,000 feet above sea level and is Africa’s tallest mountain. Kilimanjaro is one of the few places on the equator that has a snow cap. Additional wildlife that is on display at Amboseli includes lions, zebras, and cape buffaloes.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Another nice visit in East Africa is the Lake Nakuru National Park that is located in Nakuru, Kenya. This park is not quite as impressive as Amboseli, and there are no elephants. Nonetheless, there are many different species of African wildlife on display. Gazelles and wildebeests are common as are hippos and rhinos. A nice high view of the park below can be had at Baboon Cliff, named for the animal that inhabits it. In addition to the lake, the most prominent feature of Lake Nakuru is the large population of pink flamingos that reside around the lake.
Serengeti National Park
One of the most famous national parks in all of East Africa is the Serengeti National Park. This park is located on the Tanzanian side of the Kenya/Tanzania border. The Serengeti Plain is best known for the large animal migrations that take place on an annual basis. Planning a trip for the migrations will make a vacation more rewarding.
Getting to East Africa
Getting to East Africa might seem out of reach for many people, but it can be done. There are a number of airlines that allow people to earn frequent flyer miles. These can be accumulated over time, and many people will be able to earn a free flight to one of the major airports in Africa. These trips should be considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and those who are able to get up enough miles to fly for free will want to find lodgings that are in the national parks themselves. These hotels and lodges make the perfect spot to start out a game drive in the early morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active.
