With a rich history and stunning surroundings, Hungary is the perfect destination for all types of traveller. In fact Hungary is so popular it attracts 10.2 million visitors every year, putting it in the top 30 destinations in the world. Whether you travel alone, or with company, there is certainly something for everyone.
Here are the highlights of Hungary when on cheap holidays:
Travelling with kids?
Keeping kids occupied can be hard, but not in Hungary! The Children’s Railway in the Buda Hills is a fascinating day out for the whole family. Children aged 10 to 14 can drive the narrow gauge train, collect your tickets and salute you at the stations.
If your children would prefer some animal magic then Medve Otthon Bear Sanctuary will be a real treat. The sanctuary is home to brown bears that have been rescued from circuses and other entertainment establishments. Visitors are invited to feed the bears honey from wooden spoons, perfect if your children love Winnie the Pooh!
Quench your thirst!
Hungary is home to some of the most unique watering holes in the world. ‘Ruin bars’ are set in derelict buildings such as the courtyards of disused apartment blocks. They are famous for their cheap beer, cool music and interesting décor. You’ll find them in the Budapest backstreets and they are best enjoyed during the summer months, although some ruin bars open all year round.
If you’d rather have a non-alcoholic beverage then you could do worse than visit the Central Café in Budapest. Relax in the wood panelled interior, with its quirky art deco features and enjoy the delicious cakes and hearty breakfasts. An ideal way to start a busy day sightseeing!
The ultimate spa trip
Hungary boasts the world’s second largest thermal lake, Lake Heviz, and it offers a unique spa experience. Wash your worries away in the warm, mineral-rich water, surrounded by water lilies, as the underwater jets gently massage your body. Outdoor temperatures reach 27°C even in the autumn months, so it’s worth a visit no matter when you travel.
